Myself

I am intrigued and delighted to spot a very meaningful poem over the web. I don’t know any details about the author who is named by Scrapbook.com as Edgar A. Guest. At first, I really thought and was hoping it was Edgar Allan Poe but certainly it is not. However, there is no need to be dismay as the poem you are about to read is as touching as others.

Myself

I have to live with myself and so
I want to be fit for myself to know,
I want to be able as days go by,
To look at myself straight in the eye.
I don’t want to stand with the setting sun
And hate myself for the things I’ve done.

I don’t want to hide on a closet shelf
A lot of secrets about myself,
And fool myself as I come and go
Into thinking that nobody else will know
What kind of man I really am;
I don’t want to dress myself in sham.

I want to go with my head erect,
I want to deserve all men’s respect
And in this struggle for fame and pelf
I want to be able to like myself.
I don’t want to look at myself and know
That I am a bluster and empty show.

I cannot hide myself from me;
I can see what others can never see;
I know what others can never know,
I cannot fool myself, and so

Whatever happens, I want to be
Self-respecting and conscience free.

The poem is certainly beautifully worded and equally stimulating. Reading it made me self reflect on who I really am and the need to love and understand yourself before you can do the same to others. So, who are you?

  1. Jorge barrita says:

    Who am i – the self confidence in the eyes of the warrior is not the same as the average man. The average man seeks certainty in the eyes of the onlookers. Whereas the warrior seeks certainty in his own eyes and calls that self confidence. The fool sees not in the same tree as the wise man does for he persists to be his folly. Self confidence entails being righteous in ones own actions and feelings. Im the light which brongs justice. Many may think they know who i am but the bout to be opressed. Im the angel of trouble the deliverance of death who i am depends on who you are.
